Steve,

This sounds very interesting.

<blockquote>Gear6’s enhanced Memcached distro makes sites faster, ensures uptime, is easier to manage and has a much lower TCO than DIY Memcached.

Available as software, a turn-key appliance or as a cloud service. Our mission-critical Memcached distro offers blazing speed, massive scale, and more cache for less dough.</blockquote>

I suppose I'll have to test Gear6 out.

Thanks for the recommendation.

-- Edit --

Now I see what you mean about biggish/commercial sites using Gear6. When I saw the "Solutions start at under $10,000", it became clear that it's not quite for me yet. :) I'll keep it in mind as a solution for my web applications at work that can get pretty overloaded though, so thanks again.

If your site stays smallish, you'll be fine. But your data center expenses will hockey stick if you get biggish. That's why a lot of commercial sites (like mine) turn to solutions like Gear6's - check it out.

While I do wish that people would just not use IE at all, the reality is that most people just don't care or know enough about the difficulty it gives web developers.

On top of that, you have Microsoft fanatics that refuse to believe that IE is in any way inferior to other browsers.

I agree though -- Chrome is a superior browser in terms of benchmarks, but I think (for now) Firefox's extensibility is far more superior. Chrome's day will come though.

amen, I wrote up a similar post just a few days ago... I was writing up a web 2.0 application and was about to pull my hair out on some IE 6 / 7 Bugs... so i finally just fixed it for ie 7 and throw up an Alert box to IE 6 -->

alert('SORRY, but your browser was realeased in 2000!\n\n It contains many bugs that could harm your computer!\n\n You should UPGRADE NOW!\n\n Try switching to Google Chrome! www.google.com/chrome \n\n We want you to have the best experience possible and we feel you are at risk by continuing to use this browser!');

I will admit that IE 8 has improved in its own write, however, I still think Google Chrome is on top and continuing in the write direction...

I was checking out the benchmarks @
http://v8.googlecode.com/svn/data/benchmarks/v5/run.html

And Chrome killed every browser... IE 8 threw up a script is taking to long message...

Here is the results for all the browsers: (bigger number is better)

I did have dreamweaver running but no other browsers or tabs!

Chrome 3885
Firefox 480
Safari 1999
Opera 234
IE 8 79.9

Added:

 1.

to the top of my header.php file.

It worked but prevented All In One SEO Pack from functioning.

Removed it and everything went back to normal.

Please let me knowby email if you can throw any light on this.

Thank you very much.

Keith: Although I realize you're probably commenting more for link juice than anything else, you are indeed correct, sir. CSS is a nightmare in IE6 and IETester is a life saver for developers.

Keith,

I'm not really sure. I haven't had any complaints from IE6 users on my "compressed" sites, so I'm inclined to say no.

If you hear anything, let me know. :)

IE6!!! tell me about it.
I must have spent hours trying to get CSS to work in IE6.
I use IE7 but kept an old machine with IE6 on for testing.
This sounds fantastic.

Hi Scott
Interesting... does the compression cause any problems in IE6 browsers?
I've been told that gzip compression can cause problems. What about zlib?
